This tool uses JPEG-style lossy compression with an adjustable quality slider from 10% to 100%. Higher values preserve more detail but produce larger files; lower values shrink the file more aggressively at the cost of visible quality loss, particularly in areas with fine detail or subtle color gradients.

Frequently Asked Questions
What quality percentage should I use?
70-80% is a reasonable starting point for most photographic images — it usually looks nearly identical to the original while meaningfully reducing file size. Images with lots of fine detail or text may need a higher setting; simple images with large flat color areas can often go lower.
Does this tool support PNG compression too?
This tool applies lossy JPEG-style compression, which works on any image format you upload, but note that a PNG with transparency will have its transparent areas filled with white, since the compressed output uses JPEG encoding.
Why does the file size chart look non-linear as I move the slider?
Lossy compression algorithms don't reduce file size in a straight line relative to quality — dropping from 100% to 90% quality often saves relatively little, while dropping from 50% to 30% can cut the file size dramatically, since the algorithm is discarding progressively more visual information.
Will compressing an already-compressed JPG hurt quality further?
Yes, to some degree — since JPG compression is lossy, re-compressing an already-compressed JPG adds a second generation of quality loss on top of the first, sometimes called generation loss. It's best practice to compress from the original, highest-quality source whenever possible.
How much can I realistically shrink a typical photo?
